Those brm type or Fuchs with a deeper rear. Some of the monogram porsche kits have sweet fuchs wheels. Doug Empi or Radirs would be awesome too.

Radirs would look great. I'm gonna have to look around and see if I can find some resin ones somewhere. Good idea. A quick update as I've got a busy day today. Bunch of stuff to do on my car this afternoon. Custom three inch narrowed beam? Avis adjusters? Coming right up! I've opted to ditch the trunk area in favor of a highly detailed, flip-forward front end. Whatcha think so far? Stock Front Beam . . . unacceptable Beam dissected, blueprinted, drilled, narrowed, and ready for assembly. New narrowed beam minus the Avis adjusters. Going to re-adjust the adjusters once the glue is dried, then paint everything and assemble. A little crooked looking, but it's the angle. It's really straight Last but not least for today, I scribed out the driver's door. Will make for a great view inside the car. Roll cage on the way soon, RLR style. Thanks for looking, Kenney

AFX resin casts Bill ( EMPI nut)'s RADIR wheels. However if you order them, you may never see them. I would email or pm Bill here and see if he knows where you could get a set. He mastered them. He and VW Dave are extremely knowledgable in the area of Vw and related model stuff. Doug R I am a newbie .. Radirs would look great. Oh yeah, ARe you going with a tube chassis? Or off the pan. And just FYI, the mongram Porsche 1/24 slant kits have a killer transmission that looks like a mendiola or something. My friend casts them in resin. If you want one let me know,I will send you one? Doug

Ya know, i'm really not sure which way i'm gonna do this. I suppose I might as well go tube frame, cause that wouldn't be too bad to build. With this build, I originally wanted it to be a super street, or even a super modified class car. More or less a weekend warrior, strip-only car. Super comp or pro mod would be awesome and that's probably what I should do. I've got a bunch of these models, so maybe I'll do something different on the next.
There's alot of great references floating around vwtrends' website, the samba, and big wig race cars. I've got a friend who runs the super gas class, so refs there aren't a problem. I'm gonna think about it as I hack this thing up some more tonight.
I heard about AFX in Scale only selling bodies now or something. Disappointing. I'll have to ask empinut about those, they'd look pretty hot on here. I saw that kit you're talking about and turned my nose up at it before. It kinda looked like junk, but of course, this is before I got into more detailed modeling. Now I can't find one. Go figure. Thanks a bunch for the heads up. The more friend's I can make now, the better, cause alot of these parts seem pretty scarce now.

Doug R I am a newbie .. Doug - You're waay too kind. Bill is a very nice guy, and I agree 100% that the stuff he mastered is great. He makes me look(and feel) like an unproductive 'rookie' every time he belts out another fantastic plastic VeeDub. Kenney - I'm really diggin' this project, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of it as you go along. That narrowed beam is way cool....Of course I'm a little biased, because I just got a 4" narrowed/adjustable one for my 1:1 '68 ;D I think a pan-based weekend drag car with BRMs or Radirs would be the nuts; kinda like the DKP 'RennKaferCup' cars we all drool over in HotVWs magazine. If you did a Lummus-inspired full tube-chassis version, Weld Draglite rears & spindle mounts in the front would really set it off IMO.

Oh absolutely! 4" . . . That's pretty insane. I had to go a whole whoppin' 2" to squeeze my Teledials up in the front. 2" wider on the rear fenders. I really don't care for them, so i'm looking for something new now.
DKP's got some great cars, but they pretty much hate my type and my car. German Look cars just aren't popular in the states I guess. But, it's an unwanted, late model standard, and I love it.
I guess since i'm still working from the OOB pan, i'll go ahead and stay pan-based. My next build will be my car, then a full on Pro Mod.
If you guys can help me source out some parts, it'd be great. As if this project isn't unique enough . . .
Always looking for input and other ideas.

Hey Ninja (kenney?), Since my vw friends have been saying such nice things about me, I will send you a set of BRM's that I created fresh outta the mold (cast by an very nice, anynomous guy). I have even soaked them in westleys already. You could add a deep dish rim to the rear for wide slicks. I'll post pics later.
Hey VW dave...your baja rims are on their way...already soaked in westleys also.
Doug, send me an email, if i forgot to send you something i promised, I apologize!....too much going on.

Nope, no Baja for me as of yet Doug.....rest assured you'll know when that time comes. I needed Jackman-style wheels to wrap up the model of my 1:1 toy car: And Bill just happened to master a set of them

Wow. I head out for 1 day to spend some time breaking in my new upholstery . . . I'll contact you soon, as this is an offer I just can't refuse. I have a feeling this build's going to the next level. One up from what I had planned on doing. I'm going to try and plan out and get as much done as I can before the Phoenix Bugorama. I'll be out there taking another thousand or so pictures as I did the '06 Vegas Bug-In. Before then, though, if anyone has any requests for pics, or are gonna be there, lemme know. I'll be sure to get some more pics up soon. Don't want this project to run dry ;D

Well, I need some more help from you guys if you can. Those GoodYear drag rears that I have are going to kinda hinder the build. I checked Satco (first place that came to mind) and their's are a little bigger than what I have. I'm afraid that they're just a little bit too big. Bigger by nearly a scale 2".
Basically, what I have now is equal to a 27 1/2" . Satco's Hoosier pro-stocks work out to 30". I'm looking for nothing larger than a 28" in a slick. Preferably, something like a 26". Unfortunately, I don't have anything around that large that I can cast, rework, and re-cast to get the desired size. Of all the crap I have laying around, nothing will work. I can't really afford to go pick up another 5 or so kits hoping I get the right sizes I need, either.
Any help you guys can give me will won't go unappreciated.
Thanks again, Kenney

hey ninja, i got a suggestion for ya on the slicks dillema, i know this sounds crazy, but if you look at a standard nascar tire, it is 26 inches scale, if you just sand it down, and put your decal on it, you would never tell it was a nascar tire LOL
if you need them just tell me, i will send um to ya!

Hey wagonguy.
That's fantastic in more ways than one. I'm seriously not a fan of nascar, so that's news to me. I had a kit way back when, but had no interest in building it, so it quickly vanished in a yard sale.
I'll see what's available in the LHS in the mark-down bins first. I'm pretty sure, though, that i'm gonna need your help.
Appreciate the info.

Yay. A little, teeny, tiny update. Been working overtime on my bug and made the trip to and from Phoenix for the Bugorama. Good times, and loads of dirty looks. So, the tires from wagonguy arrived yesterday, and I spent a couple of hours working on them this afternoon to get them to look like there was a few passes made on 'em. They look pretty good to me, lemme know what you guys think. I'll be a little preoccupied this week. Just acquired an '88 grand marquis, so the new pimp ride ( ) requires a little attention. Sorry for the pics. Don't mean to make your eyes bleed out, but I couldn't find any better conditions to snap these in.

Thanks guys. This was my first attempt at roughing up some slicks. Plenty of references, having wasted a new set of Michelin Pilots after getting my GL on the road.
Currently mocking up the turbo header with solder and styrene rod. After doing the math, it's weird to see that a 1 5/8" header tube works out to 1.7mm in scale. All I have on hand is 1.6mm styrene. It looks so tiny, even in scale. I've got a 1 5/8" primary on my engine, and it just looks downright massive.
Doug, I really appreciate it. Can't wait to get 'em. I've been procrastinating sending out for the carb and turbo from Manny, even with a post office (literally) a 3 second walk across the street. I'm glad they look good, 'cause i'm definitely gonna need all the detail I can get in this build.
Wagonguy, these tires are awesome. After sanding by hand for an hour, I just slid them over a 10mm socket, chucked 'em in my drill, went outside and spun 'em on the sidewalk for a second, then cleaned it up with 120 grit. I was worried about screwing 'em up, but they came out pretty good.
More pics in a day or 2. Thanks again guys.

Doug - got your stuff in the mail the other day. Awesome. Plain and simple. Pics to follow. Dave - Thanks. I'm gonna run a finer grit over them soon to get the texture down a bit, they look almost too worn to run now. Now for a few updates and pics. The header, once again, is on the back burner. The design is finalized, but the material isn't. I just picked up something on Dave's recommendation, so once that's done, i'll post it up. Here's the transmissions courtesy via Doug. They're very usable, with minor air bubble damage. I've been meaning to do a write-up of how I made my $15 vacuum chamber. Despite the little flaws, most of the "damage" will be hidden and not of any sort of concern. Here's a (somewhat) close-up through my magnifying light. Sorry for the quality. Macro doesn't work all that great on my little camera. Here's a test shot of the engine mated to the new trans. Pretty much lines up how my 1:1 does. Looks like it belongs attached to the engine. Lastly, I had to Cut up the firewall to get the slicks to fit under the apron without raising the back of the car up. Also, I removed the torsion bars due to the tires. I'll be scratch building new mounts, trailing arms, and axles for this one. Shouldn't be too tough. Having lost nearly 2 mins off of my total time out at the rally this morning, i'll be working on my model all day tomorrow to get my mind off it. Updates to follow in the afternoon. Hopefully, i'll have the electric fans (you read right) built, the new trailing arms made, the new trans mounts done, and finish the turbo header. I hope i'm not posting too much without actually getting much done. I like documenting things like this and like to think someone, somewhere is finding this useful or inspirational. If I hadn't found this forum, it wouldn't be documented at all. I'm just a crazy VW guy I guess. Kenney

Kenny, Glad you like them. These are ones that Jake hooked me up with. His new castings are very clean. He now uses a pressure pot. The white one I think was the best casting. Doug R

Alrighty, been a bit since I've had an update. Well, having enjoyed my 1:1's T4 engine in the car for a little while, i've opted to move along. Sadly, to some, i'm going back to a T1 turbo engine, possibly even a rotary. There's a method to the madness, but i'll save it for some other time. Anyways, little to no progress has been made on the dragster. I'll get something done this weekend. However, some more outside help arrived just the other day. After a couple hours of squinting, measuring, researching and measuring some more . . . this is exactally the size turbo I need for this project. Special thanks to vwdave for the help and yet another set of slicks for the next project . . . From this - To this - Me? Enjoy aircooled dragsters? Get outta here!

Did you already build in an oval window?
I used the rear window from the Gunze oval, works nice in the Tamiya body!

Hey all, finally turned my computer on for the first time in, ummm, seems like forever.
I hope to get my Drag Beetle un-packed soon and get back to work on it.
My GL bug is now finished and in the process of breaking in the less radical engine. Just a 1915 EFI turbo ;D
If I can get away with shutting off my work phone for the weekend, I can get some model work going. I was gonna start before I moved, but the 4th came around and I burned my thumb lighting the celebratory explosives.
On another note, i'm going to be doing something slightly different with this model.
**PLEASE READ THIS!!!** As much as I enjoy building models, I enjoy other's interests and enthusiasm even more. If you have any suggestions, ideas, or you just plain see something that looks stupid, PLEASE, tell me. You can PM me, email me, post in this thread, whatever. By no means am I building this for me, I'm building it for everyone else out there. Once finished, and taken a clean sweep of 1st at the local model show ( ;D ), i'll be giving it away, as, sadly, I have no room in my tiny apartment to display any of my models.
Thanks guys, Kenney
Long Live The Mad Modeller VW Forum!
