I figured I'd share with Y'all one of the projects I've been working on. I'm trying to make this as accurate as possible, as this is a special build.
Back in 1968, my dad bought a new Plymouth GTX. It was Electric Blue with a 440 automatic. I was 13 at the time, and practically wet my pants when he pulled in the driveway with it. It was the most awesome car I had ever seen.
I've wanted to build this car for a long time, but kept putting it off as there has never been a kit offered of the '68 GTX. My dad passed away in February, so I thought I would build it as sort of a tribute.
I started with the AMT Road Runner kit.......
The interior took a LOT of work to get right. I used the interior components from the AMT '69 GTX kit. I sanded and rescribed the correct seat patterns and door panels. I changed the radio knobs to the proper Mopar thumbwheels, and used the console from the Revell '67 GTX kit.
The next obstacle was the unique GTX grille. I could have just sanded the Road Runner grille smooth and used the Keith Marks GTX grille decal, but I wanted a 3-D look, so I cut the grille out and replaced it with a photoetch piece from MCG intended for a '66 Chevelle. I then used the emblem from the '69 GTX grille....
The 440/automatic came from the AMT '71 Charger kit..........
I used Evergreen strip styrene to add the rockerpanel and wheelwell molding, then painted the body with MCW QQ1 Electric Blue, followed by 3 coats of PPG urethane clear.
I used the wheels/tires from the Revell '67 GTX, as they are correct for a '68....btw, if you're building any 1968 Mopar, keep this in mind. The ones from the '68 kits...including the newest '68 Charger kit, have beauty bands, which were not available till '69. "68 did not have the bands.
I HAVE gotten the chassis done, and the proper 8 3/4 rear end from the '71 Charger kit installed, but haven't gotten any pictures of that yet.
This is where it stands at this point.....I intend to start final assembly when I get home in a couple of weeks. I intend to have it finished in time for the Southern NNL. Thanks for looking!
