Part One- After a couple of seasons in his dad, three time national champion Lee Petty's shadow and three runnerup finishes in the points chase, Richard Petty was poised to take on the best that stock car racing had to offer. It all came together for him in 1964 with his skill honed to perfection, some of the early heroes leaving the sport and the re-introduction of the mighty Hemi engine. His win in the Daytona 500 served notice that it was to be the age of the Randleman Rocket and King Richard the Hemi-hearted was crowned in the victory lane celebration of the first of his seven 500 victories and the year of lhis first of seven championships. Here's what it looks like in 1/25 scale at my shop. Part Two Some drivers, the late great Fireball Roberts included, spent their career try for the "hat trick" of winning on the first four superspeedways without success. But with a car fielded by the legendary Junior Johnson and wrenched by the equally talented Herb Nab, leadfooted LeeRoy Yarbough pulled it off in a single season. Winning at Daytona (both events), Darlington(also both events), Charlotte and Atlanta in '69 he was the man to beat on the superspeedways. Here's my depiction of his droop nosed steed that he rode to glory in 1969.

That is when nascar racing was in the hands of the drivers. Smokey Yunick might argue with you there but I still remember when one of Stroppe's mechanics was turning over a 427 that he had lavished tender loving care on building to Parnelli Jones. Ol' Rufus threw a leg into the window, looked back at him and said, "That #$%^ better be an anvil or I'll kill it." LOL
