....... it's just too good to keep to myself.
I've been working on the cover for a very special race program and I've just got to share it with everybody.
Although the official announcement is set for April 1, 2008, I just couldn't wait. With the declining interest in Nextel Cup racing and the strong interest in the trucks it looks like a very colorful hybrid vehicle is on the way.
The soon to be announced Car Of Yesterday division will have its premier event, fittingly enough, at Darlington Raceway on Labor Day of 2008 with a traditional 11 AM start time.
THe real news is the cars of the new division. Patterned after the cars of the 1962 season, the last of the "box" bodies, these new racers will bring back some of the visceral excitement of the old days.
Cars will be built on a tube chassis based on the truck division with longer wheelbases and no aero "gimmicks" with the exception of sanction mandated mostly internal changes to even the competition.
The cars will use crate engines from the Ford and Chevrolet truck line and will be big block for that "heavy" sound that the longtime fan remembers so well.
Carbs will be 500 CFM 2v Holley production units and provided at the track by the sanctioning body at checkin and returned to the officials after the race.
Special exhaust systems will be developed to cut down on excessive noise while emphasizing the heavy "1500 pound cat full of cream" vintage big block rumble that is music to a gearhead's ears.
Sponsor logos are allowed on the front fenders but must meet size limits as are main sponsor logos on the quarter panels.
Main quarterpanel located sponsors, numbers and driver's names must be of a font that can be read from a distance. No "stylized" or illegible logos on the quarter panel allowed.
The bodies are all new aluminum stampings that include two piece sides that make crash repair easier with inner bracing used to retain the shape and provide for securing the body work.
Molded lexan windshield and backlight only are permitted. No side windows allowed. Saftey net required on driver's side window.
Paint schemes are optional to the teams but any team that juses a "retro" scheme will recieve a 10% increase to their point total at the end of the season.
Remember to look for the formal announcement in April but I'd like to know what ya'll think about the new division.
