I find the key to detailing is pictures--lots of them on whatever you are building. Weather it is a real rig or someone else's model. I have pics on just engines, just interiors, etc... and from them, using whatever I can find in the parts boxes, come up with something that looks like what the pic is. It might not be "in scale to the penny" but if it looks right to me, that's close enough.
