Nothing can improve the looks of model car tires, especially race car tires, as much as sanding the tread. Not only does this remove the mold parting line, it give the tire a realistic, used look. Tire sanding can be a boring, time consuming job, though. I figured there must be a better way, and there is! It's as close as your local hardware store. This is a 3/8"X2" Stovebolt, with a washer and a nut. $1.06 at the local Ace Hardware. This, some 180 grit sandpaper, and a 3/8" drill is all you need. Put your tire on the bolt, then the washer, then the nut.... Tighten the nut hand tight only. the tapered head on the stovebolt will center the tire. The head will sometimes try to pull through the tire, but it should still work ok. Now, chuck this contraption up in a 3/8" electric drill..... And spin at a low speed on a piece of 180 grit sandpaper. If your drill isn't a variable speed drill, just do a little at a time so the rubber doesn't get too hot.... And there you have it....a perfectly sanded racing tire in about 10 seconds, and just a few pennies over a dollar!

I should also add that I don't tighten the nut down so the tire will spin on the bolt then hold the dremmel against the tire... The tire spins and gets scuffed....
