Today I will show you my conversion of an Autocar Wrecker.
This model was built up in 1982 for a german modelers contest.
All participants got the same model from MATCHBOX: The AMT Autocar Dump Truck in scale 1:25.
When I received the kit I saw a photo in a modelers magazun showing only the Wrecker from right front view ...
I had no idea how a holmes wrecker looks like so I improoved it as good as possible - the result was a second place in the German contest.
Now, I built up the kit out of box, but not using the Dumper-parts. Because the Motor looked so nice that I thought over how to present it from time to time, so I cutted the Hood in two halves and made them moveable with two needles which I roasted over a cigarette-lighter and then sticking in the ends of the hood parts.
Of course I had done fitting holes, in Radiator and Firewall, so upper part of hood was moveable. Then the lower hood-part was added with a hinge as used in RC-model-planes. same way the left door was cut of and then made moveable with another hinge.
Interrior is allmost stock, only the "clipboard" was taken from the AMT Police interceptor, also the Pumpgun left behind the driver-seat.
Front bumper was extented by a treatplate fom AMT Ladder-chief also the winch which was former the winch of that ladder-truck.
Then the two "Sticks" on bumper are simple Needles which are allmost in new shirts ...
Then the lower wrecker part was taken from AMT Peterbilt Wrecker not using the boom. The the two booms are made of plywood and alumium-pipes. The winch fpr the towing ropes are from a RC-Fire-fighting-boat in Scale 1:25 (GRAUPNER) and the rest ist a little bit scratch built ...
But now let's have a walk around:
Color was original VW "copper-brown-metallic" what is a terrible paint, when not using a claear coat, as I did, the paint begins to rust (?) getting "greenspan" and then it looked terrible - It took days to get it in good looking shape again ;-)
Remember: This are photos of a model I bulit up in 1982!
When I took the pictures in 2009, I did not recognisize that fingerprint on the lens - so I am sorry for partial not sharp enough pics.
And at least, the truck anywhere in Utah:
