One of the hottest local drivers around the Georgia area in the 50's and 60's was the late Bill Hemby. Nobody actually counted how many feature wins he had, but a good guess is around 300. He will forever be the track record holder at the famous Peach Bowl Speedway in Atlanta, since the track is long since gone. Bill raced everything from jalopys to supermodifieds....he even ran in a few Nascar Grand American races, and he is a 2006 inductee of the Georgia Auto Racing Hall Of Fame. I have been asked by Bill's son to build a model of a '34 Ford modified Bill raced in the mid 50's. This car was raced on both dirt and pavement and was very successful. Since the only '34 3-window model ever made with a stock height roof was the old Monogram coupe/cabriolet kit....I had to do some diggin' to come up with one...but I did! I'll be using parts from Early Years and MCG on this one, and I have someone working on the decals, so kit collectors, get ready to cringe as I start cutting on this thing to make it a race car! ;D

Update: I haven't posted much lately, but I HAVE been getting a little done. The interior won't be very visible, but I decided to make the interior panels anyway, from sheet styrene.... And after all the trimming and sawing, here is a mock-up of what I ended up with...

Finally, I felt like I was getting somewhere! Prime, sand, prime, sand.....here it is in primer..... I was unsure about the paint. The day I decided to paint, it was 19 degrees with snow on the ground, but I figured what the heck, and went for it anyway. It didn't turn out too bad actually....just plain ol' Testors black from a spray can. Maybe the cold and snow helps keep dust down! The next step is decals, which I've been putting off until now. All the lettering is custom, drawn up by me on the computer and printed out on regular copy paper as a test. I'm sorta learning as I go. My plan is to print this on white decal paper, with a black outline that I can trim pretty close. Dunno. It works in my head, we'll see if it works in real life!

That is looking fantastic Tommy. The black paint job looks great. Are you going to leave the car nice and shiny or is it going to be weathered at bit ?

Wow that's pretty cool project. Maybe cold weather just might be the secret to a successful black paint job. Sure looks like you nailed it. Can't wait to see the decal work.

Thanks, Y'all! Rob, if this was MY build, I'd definetely weather it a little, but since it's going in the drivers son's display cabinet with his other racing memoribilia, I'll leave it in "new" condition.

Wow Iam hooked. I can't wait to see how your decals turn out. I have made decals one time and it was expensive. I went through 5 sheets of decal paper before I got a set I could use. My Laser printer won't print on white decal paper but does good on clear ,go figure.

Well, my decals didn't turn out as I planned. They looked great when I printed them out, but I found out when applying them that black inkjet ink is nowhere NEAR as black as black paint. They looked horrible on the car. Also, the decal paper I used (Testors white) wouldn't conform to irregular surfaces and setting solution made them shrivel up.........SO, it's off to plan "B". I've contacted a professional to make them for me on his Alps printer. That means this project is on hold till I get the decals. Stay tuned!

Well, finally, progress to report! I reached a stopping point on this 3 months ago because of the decals. In order to get them professionally printed at a REASONABLE cost, I ended up having to teach myself to use Corel Draw to do the artwork. Once I got it the way I wanted, I sent it to Joe Schulte at www.diecastanddecals.com for printing. They came out pretty good, and now my stalled project ain't stalled anymore! Should be finished with this one by the end of the weekend, and get it on ot's way to it's rightful owner!
