Starting the youngsters is key to helping this hobby thrive, and survive. I had a customer (I work in a hardware store) ask about plastic models to build with his 'little brother'. Since he is a Big Brother, he wanted to get involved in something that took quality time and wasn't electronic. I was almost speechless (yes, a new feeling for me!) as he just happened to talk with me about this by chance, so I talked with him about models. Unfortunately, my area has no more hobby shops that carry plastic, so I told him to call me if he came up empty handed and I would set him up.
This was one encouraging beam of light in an endless dark tunnel, I'm afraid.
