I'm looking for a cheap alternative to a hobby cutting mat, and I need about 8-10 cutting mats - something safe(won't slide around) and something that will protect and prolong the blade much like your regular run of the mill "self healing" mats. I'm thinking of material from the hardware store that can be cut in to pieces, such as a vinyl rolling chair floor mat, car floor mat, or such. The mats don't have to be big - just big enough for first time modelers to make some light duty cuts on. Do you all have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks

Thanks Try some mouse pads. some have a harder surface that might work well. You could even get them donated from Dell, Gateway or any other computer company.

A quilting (fabric) cutting board would be perfect for this. My wife has one and is constantly using a razor edge fabric cutter (looks like a pizza cutter) and it hardly marks at all.
