My first completion of the year, woo hoo!! Gary Balough's "Batmobile" dirt modified, built by famed sprint car racer Kenny Weld, was the class of the field at the Syracuse Super Dirt Week in 1980. Based on a Lincoln Contenental (yeah, right, lol), I've always thought this was one of the coolest race cars ever, and after finding a resin body kit at last years Southern NNL, I knew it was time to build it. The body is a 9-piece resin unit from Big Donkey resins. I used an AMT Gremlin modified Tobias chassis, but had to stretch the wheelbase 5/8". The torsion bar suspension is from a Monogram sprint car. I also had to rework the roll cage to match the taller roof. The engine is from the Gremlin kit, but like the real car, I moved the radiator to the side pod to make room for the "secret" ram-air induction system....which was the REAL reason for the car's success. Bumpers are aluminum rod, paint is plain ol' Model Master black, and decals are from Polecat. The wheels and hubs are my own castings. The rear tires are the left side Monogram sprint car tires.

This is awesome, I saw this car when first ran at Syracuse.. Those wheels are are great. What did you use for the silver paint?

What a unique car to add to your collection Tommy. You did a great job all the way around on this, and you can't beat the story. I'm glad you found all the components to pull off this accurate replica. Those gold decals are the first thing I notice, and I really like the "secret".

Another winner Tommy. This one has so many things going for it. Wilson beat me to it, did you use Alclad on the wheels? They look very realistic.

Thanks, everyone! Yes, the wheels are indeed Alclad. It took me awhile to learn how to properly spray this stuff. I sent another set of wheels off to be chrome plated, but I think the Alclad looks more like the polished aluminum wheels on the real thing, so I'll save the chromed ones for another project. A bit of trivia.....the only race this car was in, the 1980 Schaefer 200, was one of the first races broadcast on a brand new TV network at the time, ESPN. The race has been posted on YouTube in it's entirety....all 17 segments....so if you happen to be bored sometime and feel like watching a classic dirt modified race, here ya go: www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6r4ln3RFM0
