Chevy Step Side

Hello again friends, while my 57 Bel Air does not come out of the painting phase, started another project.


I like this truck, but here in Brazil we do not have this style.

Here in this same period we had in the model of the photos below, called the Chevrolet C14







Short bed, long bed, blazer, 4x4 and many other bodies



For this project I am using the kit below


The initial idea is to transform the 4x4 from rear-wheel drive, lower the suspension using not very large wheels to not touch anything in the body and make a simple scheme in the suspension, so that the back will use the good old leaf springs, only changed the attachment points.
And replace an engine 350 for a 427, I would do good detailed engine bay, will add the servo brake and steering system that does not have the kit, simple interior and without modifying and cut the body to not complicate, only one custom painting inspired by another GM car I'm using as a basis for the project.

Inspiration for the project




I used the suspension of bel air 57 (second kit option which has been lowered and brake disc), in front, I had only to increase the width as the truck is wider than the bel air and had to change the steering system because of the crankcase.

At the rear axle I used is not this the pictures used another who already has beam spring and the correct width, just added the brake discs of this axis that appears in the photos.


The chassis cut off the exhaust pipes and tanks and modified some sleepers chassis.










Also made the engine mounts 427. throughout this part of aligning engine, chassis and suspension gave a lot of work and required a long time, but the modifications I like to do and more love at alignment.


Then I added the upper arms










Rear suspension with new supports, then mounted kit with this part does not appear so no need to worry about finishing.


I made a new gas tank to put behind the chassis


Chassis ready, after a long time measuring everything all the pieces are coming together














Now just drop the body on the chassis and no stress.






Chassis painted and ready for assembly engine. I will not detail the frame, but as I said above I want the engine bay stand out, the engine will dive enough.

Hello friends, following an update of the assembly of the Chevy Step Side.

-On the back of the cabin I had a high relief that simulated a frieze, I did some slots in low relief and did a test with barel metal.


-As Frieze would not be good I decided to remove the trim.


- The hood kit was slightly warped, so I gave special attention to align the hood.






- One detail that I decided to change was the bumpers, because the front bumper is larger than a train track.




-So I replaced the front bumper (above) for the rear bumper (below) and adjusted to the new bumper to get closer to the body.




-I made some modifications to the bumper, as the plate holder and the tips were smoother.










-Another thing that I modified were the wheels.




-Front wheel.


-Rear wheel slightly wider.


-The new rear bumper was to cut into 5 parts and narrowed to fit in the bucket.







-Then I sanded all for shock to smooth the details and leave with the same pattern of the front.


-Both ready bumpers.


-The bed has received many adjustments.






-Another detail that I did was leak the grill.








-Grill ready.




-All ready for painting.

Very nice work! Did you use a Dremel Router to take out the back of the grill?

hi friends, thank you for the comments, I'm finalizing the engine and interior, soon we will update the project.

Dogfish7 - yes I used the dremel to leak the grill, I have an old toolkit for dremel, I think it should be in the 1960s because of the toolbox is made of bakelite.
The pictures are from when I won the kit, I'm restoring the pieces and I'm still learning how to use each tool.

Hello friends follows new update

-Carburetor details.








-I added to the engine many parts machined aluminum.














-I used this detail set the engine. Made in Brazil.








-Chassis almost ready.








-Painted wheels.




-Interior done. I used the wheel of the 69' Camaro














-I modified the rear lights.






-The air filter is machined aluminum.

Hello friends, let's one more update Step Side.

-Finally applied varnish of the body, lack now sanding and polishing.










-The hood had a little surprise today when I took it for shooting, had raised bubbles beneath the decals, at first sight thought the decal had reacted with the varnish and I got scared, but seeing calmly were air bubbles that I could move with finger movement on the hood, so I got a tattoo needle and stuck the bubbles of air and everything was normal.


-I could not resist and made a pre assembly just to enjoy a little.






Now lack polish to follow assembly.

Hello again friends, go to another update of the Chevy Step Side project.
It took me a while to update the project, as did some last minute changes, fix some details that were not me pleasing and as the kit is very simple have to build from scratch many small details outside the engine compartment detailing part.
Let the photos.

-A detail that I decided to modify the last time was the floor of the bucket, the plastic simulating wood was not pleasing me (because I can not paint simulating wood, then the end result would not be good).


-I decided to use a piece of wood flooring I have and is thin enough to replace the floor.



-Starting The work of leaking parts simulating wood.




-After Was just choose a tone of wood to match the paint and cut small pieces of wood, by the way is very difficult to cut this wood flooring, but it is easy to sand to make adjustments.




-To the engine compartment, put a brake booster, which does not come in the kit, and adapted the brake lines. In the pictures there is still paint everything.



-Looking the kit engine and seeing some pictures of reference, I realized that it makes little sense a pickup truck of this size does not have power steering, and as the kit does not have, because this engine came from a Camaro, I decided to make the power steering in kit engine.
I devised a simple system, a holder, steering pump hydraulic (coming from the scrap box), a pulley and a few hoses. The support used a steering column P.E. Mr. Model adapted.




-The water reservoir of windshield, in last time I decided to make the engine of the windscreen wipers, but the photos only in the next update.

Hello friends, thank you for the comments, I am very happy that you guys are enjoying the assembly.

Because of the new hydraulic steering system, I had to make some modifications to the engine.
-The belt would be very strange in this configuration


-So I changed the alternator to the other side of the engine and decided to put a more detailed alternator. And also I changed the color of chrome pulleys for aluminum.





-Now I could put air conditioning...  No I think not. Done.    But the air filter is also replaced by a more detailed model.


-Engine compartment with painted brake booster and the electric motor of wipers.

-I made the mirrors using styrene sheet




-Wipers in P.E. already painted and ready to install.




-I made the steering column.


-I have already glued the glass and the interior in place, now it is necessary to glue the body on the chassis and finish the bucket and put the details and finish.

Hi friends, let's go on another little update of the project, in fact I think it's the last update of this project before finally finalizing.

-99% finished engine, put the hoses of the hot air.


-Front grille and front bumper ready and glued in place.


-I finished the bucket floor.




-The part that is delaying the completion of this project are the sides of the bucket. They look like they are warped and do not stick in place, one side glues in place and the other side takes off. Not to mention that there were some spans between the pieces. Because of this unfortunately I had to glue the cover of the bucket so it will not open.

-Now it's too little to finish.

That is too bad about the pickup bed. It is a shame that it does not fit well, as you have done so much nice work on it. Overall, the truck looks great!
