The body modifications are nearly complete but I'm still confused on a powerplant. Slightly modified base motor? Front mounted V8? I even considered the Allison V12. I'm leaning more towards a rotated 180 degrees Porsche 911 motor, making a mid-engine machine. My big problem would be access to showing off the engine. Sugestions? Some very wide rubber. I love the underbody nose work. All those holes and vents are filled. I'm happy with the raked top. Nice stance. Motor??

Yamaha V6 out of the Ford Taurus SHO kit. Add a turbo or two. I put a Quad 4 in mine, ran the intake and exhaust out the back, the hood didnt close though.

Didn't even consider a V6 but it's a pretty good idea that I may consider. Thanks for the input. You have any photos of yours with the quad 4?

How about a traditional power plant? A turbo Corvair ? Paul

Cool! Reminds me of what a beetle would look like in Rat-Rod trim. Ever thought of ratting it out to finish it?

How about a traditional power plant? A turbo Corvair ? Paul Thought about it but it might be a little to common for this car. The Fujimi Porsche engine is just a little bigger and I have tons of them, and lots of great reference. I am a total Porsche nut case.

Go with a Porsche engine. I'm sure you will make it all tricked out.

Here are a few updated photos of my Street VW. The Chassis is from a Tamiya Boxster. Yes, I decided on Porsche Power. The Boxster engine has been removed and will soon be replaced with a 911 turbo engine rotated 180 degrees and mid mounted.2 nights work making the Boxster chassis fit the modified 66 beetle body. Here's a shot of the stock Boxster chassis along side of my modified unit. The old engine cover is now part of the new hatch-back. Have to get to the engine somehow. I'll have a lot of time this weekend to work on the bug. Look for more photos by Sunday.

I can't get all 4 wheels to touch the table...LOL. I'm always impressed with modelers who can take several different kits and do what Gary is doing. Looks good so far. Keep us posted.

I agree, the hatch setup is the duck's guts! I'll be keeping an eye on this one, as it's way cool even in the mockup stage.

here is how I spent part of my weekend. The underhood work is almost finished. The spare now fits and I have plenty of room for the nitrous bottle, amps, strut brace and battery. Thought I would give what I have finished a trial fitting. I'm happy so far. Here's a mock-up of the rotated Porsche engine.OK, last one for now.So what's in store next week? Well, I plan on getting the hatch area sides boxed in and the doors cut open. After that I'll be able to install a mild roll cage. Stay tuned.

WOW. Thats awesome stuff Gary. Any idea on a color yet? The color (for now) just happens to be shown in one or two of the posted photos, in the background, nail polish of course. Can you find it?

OK, here are the latest. First off, here is the color I'm planing. It has a real nice gold metalic pearl.Got one of the doors opened tonight. I reshaped the front edge to flow with the body better and lenghtened the door on the hinge side. Suicide doors will work great. Turned out nice.So what do you think? Do I make a full window frame like the original bug, or go frameless like these photos?Tomorrow, Ash Wednesday, I'll try to get the other door looking like this one, and start adding more support around the doors. Later gang!

Frameless!! I was looking at the photo with the tires and the one wheel rim on the rear.....ya know ...Hubless would look over the top!! Paul My buddy Chip also said frameless and I'm leaning about 70% that way, but I could be swayed. Haven't even considered wheels yet, but whatever I do will have the machined outer rim as shown. What do you mean by hubless?

Alright, I believe this one is going to be bookmarked.
Pointing out the obvious here, but like any bug, there's very few things you can do to it to make it look less like a bug. The "frameless" idea won't change that one bit. Go frameless.
This is gonna be one hot lookin' bug. Fantastic job!

Here's a couple new photos for you. The first is my brass door hinges. Just flat stock bent to shape and drilled to the inside diameter of my embedded brass tube in the door jamb. This next photo shows the hinges assembled and installed by slicing slots through the embedded tube. The door panel will be glued to this plate. Now the big problem. I didn't install the tube far enough to the rear of the bug. When you opened the door, the door hits the bodywork. Solution is to grind out the brass tube and install a new tube about .06 to .09 rearward. This will allow for proper door clearance. Oh well, better luck tomorrow. By the way, the slots that are cut for the door hinges will be filled on the outside of the body with a thin peace of plastic, and will never be seen in the final model.I did however get the other door cut open.
Later Gang!

Paul: I see what you meant on the "hubless" thing now. I'll keep that in mind for a future project but I think I'm going to go with a more conventional rim on this bug. Thanks for the info on the wheels.

Here's how I spent my Saturday night. First I ground out the misplaced brass tubes, and drilled and installed new ones. Next the door was mounted and this time it all works well. Tomorrow night I'll get the other door mounted and get started on installing pivots for the front trunk.
